Tree Plantation at Dahanu

The main features of a Wadi model are economic upliftment of the farmers through sustainable agriculture, social empowerment, improvement in the quality of life including health, and women empowerment in tribal-dominated areas. The broad interventions are in the areas of land planning, soil, and water harvesting measures, and improved farming-based agroforestry practices. Therefore, Wadi not only strengthens the agrarian livelihoods of the tribal households but also increases food and nutritional security. We have helped 213 farmers in Dahanu with fruit trees like cashews, mangoes, guava, etc. to be planted with the crops as part of afforestation linked with income generation.

Tree Plantation Campaign:

On the 1st of July AROEHAN with Tata Motors successfully planted 10,000 trees on Forest Land in Jawhar in collaboration with the Forest Department. These trees have been planted over 40 acres of land and will be maintained by the Joint Forest Management Committees.

AROEHAN’s Tree Plantation Campaign has been designed in a way so as to provide livelihood opportunities for the people of Mokhada and Jawhar. Carefully selected tree species that are suitable to the local terrain have been given to local farmers. AROEHAN sponsors the sapling and manure cost while the farmer ensures maintenance of the sapling thereby guaranteeing the survival of the tree.

This year AROEHAN will be planting over 1.25 Lakh trees in Mokhada spreading over 800 hectares of land. The trees are a combination of 60% fruit-bearing and 40% other varieties and will be planted in collaboration with local farmers, they include Ber, Moha, Mango, Cashew, Bael, Neem, Tamarind, Karanj, Jambhul, Pangara, Peepal, Guava, and Seetaphal.

Notebook Distribution Drive:

AROEHAN in collaboration with Youth for People distributed over 2 lakh notebooks to children in Mokhada and Jawhar. Youth for people has been raising funds for notebooks for children in Mokhada for the past 3 years. This year, the children were also entertained by Kabir Cafe – a Mumbai-based music band that sings songs based on Sant Kabir’s poetry.

Medical Eye Camp:

Aroehan in association with National Association for Blind organised a free medical eye camp in Mokhada on 26th December 2014. The people were provided free eye testing followed by free eye operations for identified patients on the 27th December 2014 at Jawhar hospital.
